coming and going

.

Blogger is up, and i get to post.  Close enough to the weekend though, that most
people don’t really care.  Readership and posting goes way down friday through
sunday evening around this neighborhood.

As i have been posting over the years, i have found it’s not different from any other
way that i get to know people and like them, and then have, at some point, a parting.
Yet, as i think of this, and how i can miss those that i grow fond of, i think of how i
have been blessed to have been allowed to meet them in the first place.

Opening my heart is a bittersweet operation.  But, there’s no sweet without bitter.
And God’s grace is enough, and greater than the bitterness.  And the open heart He
fills with His sweet peace.

.

There’s a world of trouble
Trying to take its turn
I can hear it shaking underground

And half a dozen lessons
I might never learn
Not until them troubles come around

But there’s only one and only
Who could go and leave me lonely

listening and Love

.

listening requires your heart being in the Love of the Lord.

Love the Lord.

when listening to anything or anyone, even our self,
we can hear our Lord’s voice speaking truth in His Love.

Jesus is the truth.

“The most important one,” answered Jesus “is this:
‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all
your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no commandment greater than these.”

clive staples (jack) lewis

yep, his friends called him jack.

continuing from last week’s post:
in june of 1910 lewis left the wynard school in watford and was enrolled as a boarding
student at campbell college in belfast.  just one mile from little lea.  he was there until he
developed respiratory difficulties.
in 1911 he was sent to malvern, england, which was famous as a health resort, especially for
those with lung problems.  there he was enrolled as a student at cherbourg house (which he
referred to as “charters”).  warnie, his brother, was close by as a student at malvern college.
jack remained there until june of 1913.  it was during this time that he abandoned his
childhood christian faith.  in september 1913 he entered malvern college and stayed until
the following june of 1914.

as a teenager, lewis learned to love poetry, especially the works of virgil and homer.
he also developed an interest in modern languages, mastering french, german, and italian.

with the chapter called “the shocking alternative.”

several things in this chapter stood out , as in the closing paragraph where jack is
speaking about when people call Jesus a great human teacher, and how Jesus has not
left that option open to us.

what really hit my heart though, was in the third paragraph
that contains this sentence about free will:

“Because free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes
possible any love or goodness or joy worth having.”

which leads into the part about God knowing what happens when anyone chooses to use
their freedom in the wrong way.  and the part about putting the self first, wanting to be the
center, wanting to be God.

there are a lot of important points in this chapter, beyond the few that i’ve touched upon.
again…jack’s writing is packed to the brim, with no wasted words.

view with a window

my latest rear-view :-)
if i may say so, i think it’s the coolest back window in town.

only clean a window if you intend to paint on it.

child heart

my very first blog was called “child at heart.”  i’ve been through a few blogs
and blog names since then.  actually, i can’t recall which year it was that i started
blogging.  maybe bob spencer could remember, since he’s the one who
recommended that i start my own blog.
i don’t even remember how i came upon his blog.  i was pretty new to the
internet at the time, perhaps i googled something that took me to his blog.
anyway, after reading bob’s blog and commenting on it for awhile, he probably
thought that i needed another place, besides his comment box, to write.
i know that over the years, i keep coming back to some things.  each time i come
back to these words “a child at heart” i have been taught a little more.  it’s like i’m
able to see a new perspective on it, an addition to the previous thought and how it
pertains to my relationship with God.  i feel that my heart is very close to my
spirit.  i think that a child’s heart is softer, more trusting, and more open.  it is also
easier for it to feel pain and hurts.  i think that a child’s heart hears the voice of
the Holy Spirit much easier than the world hardened heart.

God helps us to remember this child heart, this listening and trusting spirit, again.
and our heart and spirit can become more accepting to hearing the Spirit of God.

spirit

.

spirit

spiritually we do not lead.
this is the christian life.
because of Christ, our spirit is led by the Spirit of God.
we know His Voice.
He speaks to the spirit, the heart of a child.
His child.

if we do not follow the Holy Spirit, then we are putting our “self” first.
and when we put “i” and “we” first,
we try to lead,
and we turn what God has given to us
into man-made religion,
instead of a Spirit-led gift.

i encourage all those that think that they follow, to think again.

listen to your God.

clive staples lewis

born:
112 years (and 9 months) ago
november 29. 1898
~ in belfast, northern ireland
to albert j. lewis and
florence augusta hanilton lewis.
his brother, warren hamilton, called “warnie” by clive, was born june 16, 1895.

in 1905 the family moved to a new home, “little lea,” on the outskirts of belfast.

both warren and clive were initially taught at home, by their mother, flora, and a governess.
but, three years after the move to little lea, their mother died of cancer, on august 23rd.
his father also lost his brother and father this same year.
in september, clive was sent to the wynyard school in watford, where his brother had been
enrolled since 1905.  he was unhappy there.  he complained about the vicious and sadistic
headmaster who was eventually committed to an insane asylum when the school closed.

there is a group reading of “mere christianity” going on.
and there are posts being written each week, and posted on wednesdays.
the personalities in the group makes for good variety.

the chapter this week is entitled “the invasion.”
and these are the ideas that transpired from what i read:

simple.

reality is not simple.  i agree.

yet, God has made our life in Him simple, spiritually speaking.
simple… in that there is only one thing to remember.
God has given us this great gift,
which is…
communication with the Holy Spirit of God.”

*note:  simple does not mean easy.

simplicity.

simplicity that can be made into something complicated
when
we listen to the lies of the enemy, instead of the truth of the Spirit.

yes, we are told many lies in this world…
in this “enemy-occupied territory.”
anything
that might keep our attention away from  simply abiding.

abiding.

the communing between our spirit and the Holy Spirit of God.

(or as clive might have put it, “listening in to the secret wireless of our friends.”)

games, popcorn and dad

.

when i was young, the one person that i could always count on to play a board game with
me was my dad.  on a weekend evening, or in the summer time, maybe with some fresh
hot popcorn made in the big aluminum sauce pan, and topped with some real melted butter
and salt.  we would take off our shoes and sit down on the carpeted floor in the living room
and set up the game on the round wooden coffee table.  those were some good old times.

i never did thank him for that…

daisies and dandelions

.
i went to a small quilt show yesterday totin’ a camera…

you can see one photo per post at daisies and dandelions(clickaroonie here)

the first photo is already up
and i am hoping to put a new one up every day.

they are mainly up-close views of the material and stitches.

i have also put the link in my side bar
in case you feel like looking later on.

.

curb and quilts

.

this photo is of a crumbling curb and a grate that surrounds a small tree.
it’s a limited time parking spot that is usually open.  i could hardly get in or
out of my car door as the little tree and my door were having a tussle.
i was picking up some food-to-go from the ixtapa restaurant.  i had settled
the food into the car and thought i would snap a picture.  the dark spots on
the grate were from little drops of rain.  i made it into the car before it was
cats and dogs.

and it smelled so good on the way home.  burrito, baby!

coming this weekend:
a quilt show at the champoeg heritage visitor center, with more than fifty
historical and modern quilts to be displayed.
also, costumed volunteers from the piecemakers quilt guild giving quilt
demonstrations.  i assume that the costumes are of a historical nature.

i’m hoping to go and have a good look.
